The Army Cadets is one of Canada’s oldest youth programs, supported by the Department of National Defence and the Army Cadet League of Canada. It emphasizes leadership, citizenship, and fitness, guiding cadets to become responsible community members without any obligation to join the military.
Each branch offers valuable experiences, but we believe Army Cadets provides the best mix of leadership, adventure training, and teamwork. We encourage you to visit us and see if it’s the right fit for you!
Cadets take part in expeditions, hiking, camping, orienteering, marksmanship, leadership training, fitness activities, and more. There are also opportunities for travel, competitions, and optional summer training programs.
No, cadets are not part of the military. While cadets gain leadership and discipline skills similar to those in the military, there is no requirement to enlist. The focus is on personal growth, community involvement, and developing valuable life skills.
The program is completely free. It is funded by the Department of National Defence, with local fundraising support. Uniforms, training, most travel expenses, and activities are covered.
Cadets are not paid during the regular training year. However, those who attend summer training receive a training bonus. Senior cadets who return as Staff Cadets can earn a daily wage.
Once you’ve been trained in safety and responsible handling, you may participate in our marksmanship program using a specialized air rifle or a .22 if you become involved with our biathlon team. Cadets are closely supervised by qualified Range Safety Officers. Advanced summer camps may allow the use of higher caliber rifles.
You’ll have senior cadets guiding you, but they are there to instruct and mentor, not to belittle or intimidate. As you learn and prove yourself, you’ll take on leadership roles and mentor newer cadets in turn.
Absolutely! You’ll be placed in a platoon with other new cadets, so you’ll quickly form bonds. Team-based training, regular events, and shared experiences help cadets build strong lifelong friendships.
Cadets generally receive two types of uniforms: a Field Training Uniform (FTU) for outdoor activities and a Dress Uniform (DEU) for formal parades. Both are provided at no cost but must be returned upon leaving the program.
Yes! Throughout your cadet career, you can travel for training exercises, competitions, and community events across Ontario and sometimes beyond. Senior cadets may also have opportunities for national or international exchanges.
Yes. The Army Cadet League of Canada has an insurance program that covers cadets during authorized activities. If you have any questions about coverage, speak with corps staff for the latest details.
