How to Join as a Staff Member

Joining as a staff member with 2964 Walden Irish Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps is a rewarding opportunity to mentor and develop youth leaders. There are two primary ways to become involved:

  • Civilian Volunteer (CV) – A contracted position that focuses on supporting cadet training and administration without serving in the Canadian Armed Forces.
  • Cadet Instructor Cadre (CIC) Officer – A commissioned officer role within the Canadian Armed Forces, responsible for supervision, leadership and formal instruction of cadets.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Civilian Volunteer is a contracted staff member who supports the cadet program’s training, administration, and logistics. CV's are not members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). They undergo background checks and vulnerable sector screenings to ensure cadet safety. CIs often assist with:
  • Weekly training nights and weekend exercises
  • Administrative tasks (record-keeping, supply management)
  • Instruction in specialized areas (e.g., music, marksmanship, drill)
A CIC Officer is a member of the Canadian Armed Forces, commissioned to train and lead cadets. They complete basic officer training and ongoing professional development. Prior experience as a cadet or in the CAF is not mandatory, but it is highly beneficial. Service as a Civilian Volunteer first is required to gauge suitability.
Civilian Instructor (CI) Requirements:
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Successful completion of an acceptable Police Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Search
  • An acceptable combination of previous service or beneficial skills
  • Complete a satisfactory interview with the Commanding Officer
Cadet Instructor Cadre (CIC) Requirements:
  • Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Successful completion of an acceptable Police Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Search
  • Successful completion of background check
  • Ability to meet CAF medical standards
  • An acceptable combination of previous service or beneficial skills
  • Complete a satisfactory interview with the Commanding Officer
  • Available position at the Corps
  • Contact the Corps Commanding Officer or Administration Officer to schedule an interview.
  • Civilian Instructors (CVs) can potentially be paid if there is an open slate position or if they are acting as the supervising officer of an activity
  • CIC Officers are paid if they occupy a slate position according to CAF pay scales and must meet ongoing training and service requirements.

Civilian Instructors (CV's) typically assist during weekly parade nights (one evening per week) and occasional weekend exercises or activities.

CIC Officers attend weekly training nights, weekend exercises, and must complete additional courses throughout the year. They are responsible for planning, leading, and reporting on cadet training activities.

While prior cadet or CAF experience is very helpful, it is not strictly required. We look for applicants who demonstrate leadership, a willingness to learn, beneficial skills, and a passion for positively impacting youth.

Civilian Volunteers receive on-the-job guidance from experienced staff and may attend workshops relevant to their duties (e.g., administration, supply, or specialized instruction).

CIC Officers attend formal CAF courses, such as the Basic Officer Training Course, environmental, and specialty training to prepare them for leadership and instructional roles.
